When the AI revolution meets API

The interplay between AI and APIs: key takeaways of APIDays 2025
The rapid growth of AI and APIs is reshaping the technological landscape. APIs serve as the foundation for integrating AI into applications, enabling automation, innovation, and smarter interactions. This relationship offers immense opportunities but also presents significant challenges.
The symbiosis of AI and APIs
APIs are essential enablers for AI integration, allowing AI agents to access and manipulate data across platforms. The concept of “AI-ready APIs” is gaining traction, facilitating seamless AI-driven innovation. Conversely, AI enhances API usability through generative tools, making API consumption more intuitive and efficient.
Emerging trends and data insights
Gartner’s data reveals a surge in MCP (Managed Cloud Platform) servers—over 36 million—leading to a 100x increase in API calls. This exponential growth signifies a shift from managing individual API integrations to developing MCP clients capable of orchestrating multiple servers, simplifying application development. However, several speakers highlight key areas that need improvement to fully realize this revolution.
Security and control challenges
Human Orchestration vs Loss of Control
A pragmatic two-step approach is proposed to manage AI decision-making and request sequencing. Initially, human oversight is essential to supervise and verify AI outputs, ensuring control is maintained. Eventually, AI agents could self-orchestrate without human intervention, but this would require systems to demonstrate transparency and ethical accountability.
Security
Managing fine-grained API access via a global server remains a challenge. The trust process for MCP clients accessing APIs through MCP servers is not yet clearly defined, raising concerns about security and control.
Sovereignty
MCP clients rely on MCP servers to achieve their goals, but there is limited control over which servers are used. Ensuring traceability, reliability, and monitoring of server orchestration is crucial to build confidence and maintain sovereignty over the process.
Evolution of API gateways
Traditional API gateways are transforming into AI Gateways to accommodate the influx of generative AI and MCP servers (and Google A2A protocol). These gateways must manage dynamic access, ensure security, and support autonomous AI interactions. However, Gartner notes that AI gateways are for now more a target than a concrete reality.
Societal and ethical considerations
While AI can optimize API consumption and reduce manual effort, concerns about energy consumption and societal impacts are rising. Initiatives promoting green coding and responsible AI deployment are essential to balance technological progress with ethical considerations.
Future perspectives
The future points toward autonomous AI agents capable of handling complex tasks independently, potentially reducing the need for traditional applications. Marketplaces for AI agents are expected to emerge, offering safer and more controlled environments for AI interactions. Nonetheless, maintaining human oversight and establishing robust governance frameworks remain vital.
