Meet the 2d position of the 2024 Orange Innovation Cup
In life-threatening emergencies, time is of the essence. Yet, in many critical situations, the lack of mobile network coverage makes it nearly impossible to locate individuals in need of rescue. Whether it’s a lost hiker deep in the mountains or survivors trapped in the aftermath of a natural disaster, connectivity can mean the difference between life and death.
Enter Camarescue, an innovative solution that combines hardware and software to bridge the gap between connectivity and emergency response, ensuring that no one is left untraceable.
At this stage, Camarescue remains a concept under development, with no fully operational product available yet.
The Innovation behind Camarescue
Camarescue operates through two cutting-edge modes that adapt to the availability of network coverage:
Mode 1: Leveraging Existing Mobile Networks
When a mobile network is available, the process is simple yet effective. By entering the phone number of the person being searched for into the Camarescue app, the system uses the CAMARA API for geolocation to instantly provide the location of the individual. This mode is quick, efficient, and taps into existing infrastructure to save precious time.
Mode 2: When the Network Comes to You
For areas without mobile coverage, Camarescue shines with its revolutionary approach: “If you can’t come to the network, the network will come to you.” This mode employs a lightweight 3G microcell technology connected to the core network via satellite. The portable solution can be mounted on a rescue vehicle, truck, helicopter, or even a drone. By stationing the antenna for 20 minutes, it enables mobile devices within its coverage area to connect to the network.
To conserve battery life, mobile devices in areas without coverage periodically check for a signal—every 6, 12, or 18 minutes, depending on the model. This ensures that even in remote locations, phones can connect to the network when the portable antenna is deployed.
Additionally, the Camarescue system aligns with environmental responsibility by saving helicopter rotation hours and reducing the deployment of significant personnel on the ground.
Empowering first responders
Camarescue is designed with simplicity and efficiency in mind, empowering first responders like firefighters, law enforcement, and rescue teams. Here’s how it works:
- The rescuer inputs the phone number of the individual they are searching for into the Camarescue app.
- If the phone is within a network’s reach (Mode 1), the location is retrieved instantly.
- In areas without coverage (Mode 2), the deployed portable antenna connects to the target device, transmitting its location to the app.
Once the individual’s location is identified, rescuers can immediately plan their intervention or even call the person directly to assess their condition and provide instructions. This streamlined process reduces delays and increases the likelihood of successful rescues.
Why Camarescue is a game-changer
Camarescue’s innovation doesn’t just fill a technological gap—it transforms how we approach search and rescue missions. Here’s why it stands out:
- Technological Innovation : By combining satellite connectivity with portable 3G microcells, Camarescue provides a reliable solution in scenarios where traditional networks fail. It redefines the concept of mobile coverage by making it mobile itself.
- Scalability Across Industries : While designed for emergencies, the applications of Camarescue extend to other industries, such as disaster relief, humanitarian aid, and military operations. Its portability and flexibility make it a versatile tool for various sectors.
- Eco-Efficiency : Camarescue’s battery-saving design ensures that devices in remote areas remain operational longer. This is crucial for individuals stranded in extreme conditions, where conserving battery life can be critical.
- Corporate Social Responsibility : By saving lives and bringing connectivity to disaster-stricken populations, Camarescue reinforces the commitment of organizations like Orange to their societal responsibility—combining innovation with purpose.
Future possibilities for Camarescue
As groundbreaking as Camarescue is, its potential for future development is immense. Here are some possibilities:
Integration with artificial intelligence
By analyzing patterns and environmental data, AI could predict the most likely locations of individuals, further reducing rescue times.
Expanded Connectivity
Beyond rescue missions, Camarescue’s technology could be adapted for commercial use in remote areas, providing temporary network coverage during events or in underserved regions.
Smaller, Faster Systems
Advances in hardware could make the portable antennas even more compact and quicker to deploy, increasing their efficiency and accessibility.
Connecting to save lives
Camarescue is more than just a technological innovation; it’s a lifeline for individuals in critical situations. By bridging the gap between connectivity and rescue, it ensures that no one is out of reach—no matter how remote or challenging the location. From an environmental perspective to societal impact, Camarescue is a transformative solution that saves lives, conserves resources, and sets new standards in emergency response. As we look to the future, investing in technologies like Camarescue is not just a necessity—it’s a responsibility to ensure that help is always within reach when it’s needed most.
