Device Location Verification

Confirm whether a mobile device is within a specified geographical area using operator network signals.

Turn a claimed location into a trusted signal for risk and operations

protect accounts, sim swap, mobile device photo

Device Location Verification helps you validate a claimed location (e.g., “I’m at this address / in this zone”) instead of trying to compute a precise GPS position. It’s designed for fraud prevention, operational validation, and location-based decisioning while being more resistant to spoofing than device-only signals.

When location matters, the real question is often not “Where is the device?” but “Is the device really where it claims to be?” Device Location Verification answers that question with a simple yes/no result against an area you define.

The API checks whether the device is inside a specified circular area (latitude, longitude, radius). You use it to strengthen decisioning flows such as payment risk checks, delivery confirmation, access control, or compliance rules without relying solely on app GPS, which can be unavailable or manipulated.

The CAMARA compliant Device Location Verification is currently available in the API Playground for integration testing and prototyping.

Use cases

E-commerce fraud detection

Verify that a buyer’s device is located where they claim to be during a transaction, reducing the risk of fraudulent purchases and chargebacks.

Ride-sharing service location confirmation

Confirm that drivers and riders are at the expected pickup or drop-off locations before completing a trip, improving safety and operational accuracy.

Geofencing for targeted marketing

Trigger personalized promotions or content when users enter a defined geographical zone, such as a store or event venue.

Travel and booking location validation

Validate that users accessing travel services or booking platforms are in the expected country or region, ensuring compliance and personalized service delivery.

Case study

Certificall : digital proof system

The winning project of the Orange Network API Hackathon was Certificall, a groundbreaking solution that sets a new standard of trust for the insurance industry. Certificall’s digital proof system ensures the quality and security of source code, controlled photo-taking, and enhanced geolocation through a comprehensive certification process.

Certificall’s Key Features:

  • Controlled Photo-Taking and Enhanced Geolocation: Operators use a secured app to verify their identity and ensure the GPS is active. Number Verification API confirms the operator’s phone number, preventing identity theft.
  • Geofencing and Geolocation Verification: Geofencing sessions monitor the operator’s location, ensuring they remain within the designated area. The Device Location Verification API validates the geolocation of each step, while timestamps from Orange geolocation provide accurate proof.
  • Tamper-Proof Certification: The certified file integrates verified geolocation data, timestamped and securely stored, creating a tamper-proof certificate that can be used as legal proof.Mode 1 (network available): a rescuer enters the person’s phone number in the Camarescue app; the solution uses a CAMARA Geolocation API to obtain the person’s location quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

It returns a boolean verification result indicating whether the device is inside the area you provided (today: a circle defined by center coordinates and radius).

Device Location Retrieval answers “Where is the device (according to the network)?” and returns an area + timestamp. Device Location Verification answers “Is the device within this claimed area?” and returns a boolean verification result against coordinates and an accuracy radius.

GPS aims to provide coordinates from the device, but it can be unreliable indoors or in dense urban areas and can be manipulated on compromised devices. Device Location Verification API uses network cell tower data to confirm whether the device is at a claimed location.
