The Network as Code Hackathon at VivaTech with Orange & Nokia : two days dedicated to Innovation

During the 2024 edition of VivaTech, Europe’s largest startup and tech event, Orange and Nokia co-hosted an exhilarating 2-day hackathon focused on Network APIs.

Philippe Ensarguet, VP Software Engineering, Orange and Shkumbin Hamiti, Head of Network Monetization Platform, Nokia introduced the event to the participants, emphasizing the critical role of network monetization and the transformative potential of APIs.

Diverse Profiles and Enthusiastic Engagement

The Network as Code Hackathon was a resounding success, with 12 teams and 27 participants competing. These participants were selected from an initial pool of 65 candidates and represented diverse profiles, including startups, established companies that Orange has been working with, and students eager to learn about network management and connect with experts.

Participants could immerse into VivaTech’s vibrant environment, build applications on a robust network foundation with expert support, network with potential partners, investors, and tech visionaries! Finally, participants pitched their project in front of the outstanding jury.

Support and Resources at the Hackathon

During the hackathon, participants were provided with explanations about the available CAMARA APIs on the Nokia Network as Code platform, comprehensive documentation available on Orange Developer portal, and most importantly, the support of mentors.

The feedback received during the hackathon was highly positive, with participants praising the excellent quality of APIs and the level of documentation provided. The Orange Developer portal was also highlighted as a valuable resource.

Standout Use Cases of Network APIs

Several impressive use cases emerged, showcasing the wide range of applications of Network APIs. The jury selected three standout use cases.

#1 . Domos.ai proposed a connectivity use case using the Quality-of-Service API. By leveraging network insights, the Quality of Service API improves real-time communication of applications. This function offers a consistent user experience to the end users, such as improved latency when using the Teams application.

#2. LabLabee developed an application which enables elderly individuals with mental loss of autonomy to maintain their independence outside of their homes within a defined geographical area, surpassing the limitations of Wi-Fi range, without requiring an additional device thanks to Orange Geofencing API.

#3. NearMe team developped a location-based promotions and mobile service with secured on-boarding using Sim Swap and Number Verification APIs. When a mobile device enters a specific area, notifications are sent to nearby merchants, who can offer personalized promotions. NearMe is a team of two individuals who didn’t know each other before the hackathon and new nothing about Network APIs😊

Awards and Future Collaborations

The finalist teams were awarded with tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and the first-place team will continue its collaboration with Orange to implement its solution.
