Frictionless Onboarding & Login for E‑commerce
Keep sign‑up and login fast, while reducing fake accounts and takeover-driven losses
Keep onboarding and login low-friction for legitimate shoppers while adding network‑originated trust signals when risk is real. Use KYC Match as the identity consistency anchor, combine it with Number Verification and KYC Tenure to reduce OTP friction and screen risky profiles, and trigger SIM Swap only for high‑risk moments like password resets or sensitive account changes.

The problem in e‑commerce
Most e‑commerce teams fight two enemies at once. On one side, you need frictionless acquisition: every extra step at sign-up or first login reduces the number of customers who actually complete the journey. On the other side, attackers exploit the same frictionless design through promo abuse, scripted account creation, credential stuffing, and account takeover.
The problem is that many “signals” used today are either easy to spoof (self-declared data, email checks) or costly in UX terms (OTP challenges and manual reviews applied too broadly). What you need is a set of high-trust signals that can be called dynamically, based on risk, and that integrate cleanly into your decisioning engine.
Where this bundle fits in the e‑commerce journey
This approach is most effective at the points where e‑commerce fraud creates measurable loss or operational cost:
During account creation, it helps you reduce fake or inconsistent identities while keeping the majority of customers in a fast path. During login and session trust, it helps you reduce OTP dependency and step-up only when risk increases. During account recovery and sensitive changes (password reset, address change, new payment instrument, loyalty redemption, marketplace payout changes), it provides a stronger set of checks before you allow actions that are expensive to undo.
You should track impact on three lines: conversion, fraud/abuse, and operations. Conversion metrics include sign-up completion and first-login success rate, especially on mobile. Fraud metrics include promo abuse rates, account takeover incidents, and high-risk-change abuse (e.g., address change followed by a high-value order). Operational metrics include reduced support tickets for OTP/reset flows and lower manual review volumes because fewer cases are ambiguous.
How it works
The implementation is not “run every API for every user.” It’s a decision ladder that your fraud engine controls.
- When a customer signs up or logs in on mobile, your backend can call Number Verification early in the flow to raise confidence in the claimed number without forcing the user into repeated OTP input loops.
- When identity integrity matters, such as new account creation for high-value benefits (financing, pay-later, premium membership), or before enabling a marketplace seller payout profile, you call KYC Match to check whether the customer’s key attributes align with operator-held KYC reference data. This is where you get a strong consistency signal to reduce synthetic identities and manipulated onboarding profiles.
- To keep the flow efficient, you add KYC Tenure as a stability signal on the phone number. In e‑commerce, tenure is useful for routing: stable numbers can remain in the low-friction path, while low-tenure cases can be stepped up or rate-limited depending on your policy.
- Finally, when the customer performs a high-risk action, you use SIM Swap as a step-up signal. If a SIM change happened recently, you can require stronger authentication, delay fulfillment, or route the order to additional verification. This limits friction to the subset of sessions that statistically correlate with takeover patterns.
The Network APIs used in this solution
KYC Match
KYC Match (CAMARA) validates user identity attributes by matching them against KYC data held by the mobile network operator, supporting data consistency, integrity, secure provisioning, and fraud prevention including synthetic identity fraud. France availability is presented on the Orange product page.
Number Verification
Number Verification is positioned as a low-friction verification approach in mobile contexts, reducing reliance on SMS OTP as the default. In e‑commerce, it’s a strong early-step control for sign-up and login flows.
KYC Tenure
KYC Tenure checks whether the lifetime tenure of a phone number is longer than a date you provide, and it is positioned as a trust signal for onboarding and authentication decisioning.
SIM Swap
SIM Swap is a high-signal input for sensitive actions and account recovery patterns, best used selectively so that friction is applied only when the risk profile demands it.
